Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 3

Abstract

The article describes the researches of scientists of the South of Ukraine in the branch of the historical geography during the XIX – early XX century. Russian aggressive policy in the Crimea and in Eastern Ukraine has activated the importance of the historical studies of Southern Ukraine which contain the historical-geographical component. Basic problems that interested scientists in the plane of historical-geographical study of the Northern Black Sea Coast (settlement Scythian tribes, Greek and Italian colonization, the Crimean Khanate, the history of the Cossacks, joining of the land to the Russian Empire) are outlined. It is indicated on the place of the historical geography in the works of the famous historians of Southern Ukraine (Apollon Skalkovsky, Nicholas Murzakevych, Oleksiy Markevych, Ivan Lynnychenko etc.). It highlights the scientific achievements of the leading researchers in this field of historical knowledge (Nicholas Nadyezhdin, Philip Bruun). In particular, it is noted that N. Nadyezhdin (1804-1856) made a significant contribution to the study of geography of the Scythia of the Herodot in the first half of the XIX century. In 1868 F. Bruun (1804-1880) was awarded by the Imperial Novorossiya University a doctorate in the world history for his fundamental work on the historical geography of the Northern Black Sea.
