How nasolabial angle reflects position of maxilla and upper incisors

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 6

Abstract

Assessment of patient`s soft-tissue profile is essential in making diagnosis and establishing treatment plan. It includes measurement of the angle between lines tangent to the nasal base and the upper lip contour. Objective: investigation of correlation between nasolabial angle and position of maxilla (SNA angle) as well as inclination of upper central incisors` axis (1/SN).Materials and methods: 163 lateral, randomly selected, cephalometric radiographs were investigated. All of them were traced by one investigator with a 0,3 mm pencil on acetate paper. SNA and 1/SN angles were measured. Patients were divided into three groups: with decreased, increased or correct values of NLA, which, following Mc Namara, is 102±8 degrees. To investigate correlation between two measurable parameters, r Pearson correlation coefficient significance test was used. Five per cent interpretation error and related p<0.05 significance level were accepted. Results: NLA values were within 74 to 147,2 degrees (mean 111,8). Statistically significant correlation between NLA and inclination of upper incisors` axis towards SN line (1/SN) at p<0.05 5 was detected. No significant correlation was found between NLA and SNA angles. Mean NLA value was 110,5 degrees in females and 113,8 degrees in males, which had no statistical significance. Conclusions: It was pointed out that NLA depends on inclination of upper incisors` axis rather than position of maxilla (SNA). (Orthod. Forum 2008; 4: 167 - 173).
