Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2013, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

Aim. To examine the dependence among agenesis, degree of development of third molar buds with their localization and sex and examine the correlation between the phases of their formation in relation to age. Material and methods. The material of study related to agenesis was composed of 381 randomly selected pantomograms of patients aged 10 - 18 years, 215 girls and 166 boys, and Material related to the buds’ development evaluation covered all group – 500 patients aged 8-18 years. Identified buds were assessed according to the Moorrees classification. Results were statistically analyzed. Results. In investigated material agenesis at least of one third molar was found in 30% of girls and 23% of boys. For girls, there was lack of 15,1% of buds in maxilla and 16,5% of third molars’ buds in mandible. For boys, there was lack of 14,2% of buds in maxilla and 11,5% of third molars’ buds in mandible. For both sexes, the rate of growth of buds was comparable. Conclusion. In the investigated material there were not statistically significant differences between sex and agenesis of third molars, and between the localization of buds’ gaps and sex. There was not a statistically significant correlation between stage of development of the bud, sex and localization of bud. (Pietrzak-Bilińska B, Bilińska M, Małkiewicz K, Zadurska M.
