HOW TO GIVE MEANING? “STATE OF LIFE. POLISH CONTEMPORARY ART WITHIN A GLOBAL CONTEXT”. AN EXHIBITION IN THE NATIONAL ART MUSEUM OF CHINA IN BEIJING

Abstract

In 2015, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing hosted an exhibition entitled “State of Life. Polish Contemporary Art within a Global Context”. It was a comprehensive and diversified presentation of Polish culture in China, and both its content and professional intent drew upon three main challenges. The first consisted in incorporating the experiences dispersed and offered by contemporary art in a story which would at some point correspond to the format of a national presentation. The core difficulty was the complexity and ambiguity of the relationship between contemporary art and national identity, and more precisely the form of the nation. The second challenge was translating those experiences into a story which would be understood by the audience from a different and remote culture. The obstacle was not only the translation itself, but also the very subtle aspect of the differences in the importance of similar experiences in diverse cultural contexts. The third challenge was to arrange cooperation between two countries whose cultural policies differ completely and whose cultural infrastructure is organised quite differently. Those challenges resulted in the methodology of the exhibition which, contrary to narrative exhibitions and typical expositions of contemporary art, implied the creation of a story through experiences materialised in works of art.
