Huge Cystic Hygroma of Tongue: A Case report

Journal Title: Journal of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Lymphangiomas are developmental anoma-lies in which the lymphatics fail to connect to the venous channels in a normal way re-sulting in large fluid filled spaces in the tis-sues. They usually appear by the age of two years. The most common sites are face, neck and mediastinum [1]. However, involvement of tongue is rare in this condition [2]. De-pending on the size they are classified into microcystic and macrocystic types. Well de-fined macrocystic lesions are termed as ‘cystic hygroma’. The size and location of the lesion varies enormously from massive obstruction in breathing and feeding in new-born babies to minor cosmetic cysts in older children [3]. For this reason every child with head and neck mass should be carefully evaluated. We discuss a case of huge cystic hygroma of tongue in a 3 year old child with its diagnostic and treatment modalities.
