Hyperkalemia – how to protect your patient? Case report
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2016, Vol 22, Issue 2
Abstract
Hyperkalemia is a side effect which is often observed in clinical practice. Knowledge of the causes and symptoms of hyperkalemia is extremely important due to the fact that hyperkalemia may be life-threatening. The risk of hyperkalemia concerns especially the elderly with impaired renal function, receiving NSAIDs long-term, some anti-hypertensive drugs or some antibiotics, particularly if they also apply a diet rich in potassium. Considering the fact that hyperkalemia can be detected in asymptomatic patients, it is important to periodically determine renal parameters.Key words: hyperkalemia, impaired renal function, muscle weakness
