IELTS AS A TOOL FOR INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE UK HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

The issue of effective and trusted tools selection for English language testing in the context of adaptation of the correspondent appliances to the needs of Ukrainian higher educational institutions is considered in the article. Particularly, international practices of implementation IELTS as a tool for higher education internationalization have been observed. It has been identified that IELTS can be considered as a relevant English language testing system for students, academic and teaching staff, as well as for administrative representatives of the higher educational establishments due to its advantages which the system has precisely for higher education area. Namely: accessibility and convenience, focus on international content, support of an extensive programme of research and test development, correspondence with Common European Framework of References for languages; sufficiently individualized format, taking into account applicants’ needs, complex and comprehensive testing procedure. The peculiarities of IELTS implementation into higher education area have been characterized. First of all, IELTS is considered as a trusted test for higher education institutions of European region, including the UK; the lowest entrance band score depends on the requirements of every particular university. Moreover, the requirements for every skill can differ according to further specialization. The perspective ways of adaptation of successful UK experience to Ukrainian universities needs have been identified. Particularly, it has been represented a proposal for implementation of international English language testing system through partnership agreements with international English test developers as well as establishment of consulting and registration centres for international English language exams on the basis of Ukrainian higher education institutions involving corresponding target groups: administrative, academic and teaching staff, as well as students.
