Images of Iron and Steel in Turkish Folk Music

Abstract
Iron and steel products are among the most important products that have developed societies militarily, economically and commercially since ancient times. Because of Turks continuing their lives as nomadic or settled in natural resource regions which were rich in iron and steel in their history makes it inevitable that their culture, especially music culture, is affected by iron and steel products. The study analyzed the iron and steel images in Turkish folk music works in sixty-five musical works. As a result of the analysis, when the common features of Turkish folk music works were taken into consideration, it was seen that there was a harmony between the iron and steel images used in the works and the lyrics and names of the works. While iron and steel images are predominantly encountered as myths, meanings and symbols in the products of literature and other arts, myths and symbols derived from iron and steel were found less frequently in the works and lyrics of Turkish folk music. Considering the simple and sincere structure of the lyrics of Turkish folk music, no intensive use of word art was found in the works with iron and steel imagery. It is evaluated that the image of iron and steel is suitable for use in all subjects of Turkish folk music that deal with common emotions and national characteristics such as natural events, social developments, chivalry, heroism, longing, the concept of expatriation, pain, love and suffering.
