The Ottoman-Style Clothing Samples From the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation Collection

Journal Title: LOKUM Sanat ve Tasarım Dergisi - Year 2023, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

The culture of the Near East is based on a deep-rooted past, whose cultural traces are felt in many areas, as well as being the source of cultural centers in Europe and North America. It provides a broad horizon for artists, designers and amateurs who want to venture into artistic fields, especially in art and design applications. From an international perspective, it is possible to see a section devoted to the Near East culture and art in ethnographic museums, art galleries, institutions hosting private collections and university museums in the geographies. In the article, the clothes designed by European fashion designers inspired by the Ottoman style in the collection of Alexandre Vassiliev in Lithuania, one of the northern European countries, will be evaluated according to literature and museum records. In the study, although the designers of some Near Eastern-influenced garments are not certain, it is certain that European fashion designers designed them. The aim of the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation is to preserve the beauty of tastes, aesthetic ideas, habits, and everything that makes up the cultural fabric of fashion. In the context of the protection of intangible cultural and artistic values that have been inherited from the past to the present in the geography of Turkey, it has been concluded that the dissemination of comprehensive and specialized foundations and museums, as in the example of this foundation, is a prominent issue.
