IMAGES OF MUSIC AND DANCE IN MODERN TURKISH PAINTING

Abstract

It is possible to see many pictures depicting music and dance in modern Turkish painting. Canvases presenting original and local values were executed as well as artworks reflecting Western influences. Turkish painters, members of different art groups, educated and experienced in Europe, during the time period between the last quarter of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century, had not forgotten musical components, while depicting modern Turkish life on their canvases. Ball scenes, jazz musicians and ballet dancers besides folk music of various regions, folk dances such as horon and çayda çıra had been subjects of paintings. This study focuses on the pictures of the first masters of modern Turkish painting whose date of births are between 1840’s and 1920’s. Osman Hamdi Bey and Abdülmecit Efendi among the Soldier Painters, İbrahim Çallı and Feyhaman Duran artists of Çallı Generation, Ali Avni Çelebi and Refik Epikman members of the Independent Painters and Sculptors Association, Cemal Tollu and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu from Group D, Nuri İyem from Novels Group and artists working independently such as Fikret Mualla, Cihat Burak and Nuri Abaç can be counted among the artists who included music and dance in their paintings. Music and dance acquired different apperances during this period that witnessed impressionist, expressionist and cubist approaches. In this study which excludes abstract works, Turkish paintings have been compared briefly with the European and American pictures in terms of their approach to music and dance.
