Imaging in Graves’ orbitopathy

Abstract
Diagnosis of Graves orbitopathy is based on the typical eye signs and symptoms, the evidence of thyroid autoimmunity and exclusion of other orbital pathologies. Orbital imaging helps to support the clinical diagnosis of Graves orbitopathy, to exclude any other pathology and to distinguish the active inflammatory disease from fibrotic inactive stage. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) is able to differentiate the two activity states, to asses treatment response and its advantages is lack of ionising radiation. Computed tomography (CT) is the method of choice to plan orbital decompression surgery in the inactive phase. Orbital ultrasonography can visualized extraocular muscle. Functional studies such as somatosatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) or positron emission tomography (PET) scans may assess disease activity but are not useful in diagnosis of disesase.
