Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2013, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

Factors influencing mental health of children and adolescents could be divided into biological (genetic, infectious, toxic) and psychosocial (family, school and peer group). They are characterized by constant interaction of experience starting with early attachment, interpersonal relations on one side and functioning of the brain and genetic equipment on the other side. Principles of the psychiatric care should be understood in relation with these factors responsible for mental health of children and adolescents. They include supporting families, teachers, social services, pediatricians, general practitioners and the care system of mother and newborn child, as well as other social agendas in the process of rising the children, developing systems of early interventions. Effectiveness and safety of the modern treatment methods and their accessibility for all the children in order to minimize their suffering, reduction of the disability and help to promote developmental potential are also very important. The most costly and reserved for small group of children are highly specialized hospital words, while most needed and less costly are community services such as outpatients, day departments, crisis interventions centers. Polish system of psychiatric care is characterized by uneven distribution of services, excessive concentration on hospital treatment, which has high and modern standards of care and sufficient accessibility, with much less intensive development of community services and poor financing. Small number of child and adolescent psychiatrists makes difficult quick and necessary transformation in this system.
