Impact of environmental conditions on the incidence and course of dental caries in children

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 5

Abstract

Introduction: Our environment greatly influences the formation and course of the majority of modern civilization diseases, including dental caries.Aim of the study: To perform a retrospective analysis of the dynamics of dental caries in the population of 6- and 12-year-old children of rural and urban environments in Poland. Conclusions: The results of the socio-epidemiologi-cal studies carried out between 1979-2008 indicate that significant differences in the frequency and the intensity of caries in particular that were observed as early as twenty years ago are now almost nonexistent. A dramatic improvement was noted particularly in the population of 12-year-old pupils from villages and small towns. The DMFT value for that period was reduced by half, and at present is the same both in rural and urban populations. A similar phenomenon can be observed in caries treatment effectiveness. Also the population of 6-year-olds manifests the same percentage of children free of caries in both milieus. Regrettably, the equalization of social differences has not improved significantly the general epidemiological picture of dental caries – specifically in the population of preschool children. The currently introduced reform of the educational system creates a chance to implement a national dental educational program similar to those in the developed countries. It should contribute to a further reduction of health imbalance but also to the decrease of dental caries incidence in both urban and rural environments.
