Impact of exogenous and endogenous environmental factors on non-carious lesion formation

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. In recent years, there has been an increase in the occurence of non-carious lesions. Their formation is attributed to mechanical, physical and chemical factors. Aim of the study. To determine the causes of non-carious lesion formation by assessing the impact of the exogenous and endogenous environmental factors on the loss of dental hard substance in the oral cavity. Material and methods. In a group of 165 patients, males and females, aged between 19 and 70 years, non-carious cervical lesions were found among 96 patients (group A) whereas they were not diagnosed in the remaining 69 patients (group B). Each of the subjects was interviewed on their diet, oral hygiene practices, systemic disease record, stress exposure and sensitivity to thermal and chemical stimuli. Apart from examining non-carious lesions, the clinical examination also focused on the occlusion of the patients with and without lesions. Additionally, 53 patients from group A underwent examination of saliva. Results and conclusions. The data obtained from subjective and objective research of the two groups was submitted for comparative statistical analysis, which confirmed that the frequency of oral hygiene practices, stress exposure and the presence of malocclusion, tooth loss and parafunctions constitute significant factors in the process of noncarious cervical defects formation. The coexistance or presence of one of the above-mentioned factors, that is malocclusion, teeth loss and parafunctions as well as teeth brushing more than once a day considerably increases the risk of non-carious cervical lesion formation. Abrasive defects are more and more often detected among young people and are connected with the teeth brushing technique. The abfractive defects are dominant among adults and their formation is mainly caused by malocclusion, parafunctions and loss of teeth.
