Complications arising from the incorrect use of sodium hypochlorite – description of clinical cases

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Sodium hypochlorite – a commonly used endodontic irrigant – is a highly oxidizing and antibacterial liquid. In contact with oral soft tissues, NaOCl irritates them and, when used improperly, can lead to serious complications. Aim of the study. To present complications that may occur in the endodontic treatment with the use of sodium hypochlorit. Material and methods. A display of the clinical picture of complications and the course of treatment of four patients, in whom the inadvertent contact of sodium hypochlorite with oral soft tissues was observed. Conclusions. We emphasize the necessity of effective protection of oral soft tissues and the proper conduct of procedures while applying NaOCl during endodontic treatment. The proper treatment of complications induced by sodium hypochlorite aiming at the alleviation of pain, faster absorption of haematomas, and prevention of bacterial inflammation symptoms usually leads to complete healing.
