IMPACT OF LIGHT POLLUTION ON BIRD DIVERSITY: A REVIEW

Journal Title: Innova Biology Sciences - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Humans have greatly altered the Earth's nocturnal photic environment through the production of artificial light at night, which has had an impact on bird diversity. Therefore, the objective of this article was to generate a reflective framework of the effect of light pollution as an impact factor on bird conservation. Regarding the content, the Bibliography reports that, for many years, birds have been attracted to artificial light sources; however, it has become an impact factor for their survival. This is due to the fact that it generates collisions, changes in the flight path and alterations at a physiological and behavioral level; it is mentioned that juveniles are more affected. For example, this can affect their singing, reproduction, sleep and their diet. Based on the effects that can occur in the short or long term, four main mitigation measures have been proposed to counteract this polluting activity: avoidance, minimization, compensation and rehabilitation. In addition, the various suggestions that can be chosen in the future are proposed, in order to have better control. It is concluded that, they can take action now and avoid a massive loss of species, in addition to improving the capacity for mutual respect between societies.
