Impact of Nitrogen and Potash on Growth, Flower and Seed Yield of African Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.)

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2016, Vol 14, Issue 2

Abstract

Marigold is an important flowering crop that is grown worldwide for its beauty and landscape industry. Present study was carried out to check the impact of nitrogen and potash on growth, flower and seed yield of African Marigold (Tagetes erecta) under conditions of Faisalabad. Treatments comprised five different levels of nitrogen and potash with constant level of phosphorus i.e. Control, 10-10-10 NPK g/m2, 10-10-15 NPK g/m2, 15-10-10 NPK g/m2 and 15-10-15 NPK g/m2. Experiment was laid out according to Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five treatments which were replicated thrice. Plant height (114.06 cm), leaf area (30.53 cm3), number of lateral branches (19.22) performed well under 15-10-10 NPK g/m2. Days to flower appearance responded inversely to increasing doses of nitrogen and potash as 15-10-10 NPK g/m2took 59.22days to flowerwhile control treatment took least days to flower appearance (45.44 days). Seed weight per plant, 1000 seed weight of lateral flowers were highest at 15-10-10 NPK g/m2. Seed germination (90.33 %) were maximum at 15-10-10 NPK g/m2 while increasing level of nitrogen and potash showed no major effect on fresh and dry weight of seedlings.
