Impact of pictorial warnings on tobacco users

Abstract

Pictorial warnings on tobacco products can be an effective strategy for motivating tobacco users to quit and preventing initiation of tobacco use as shown by research from other countries. However, the earlier studies from India did not report a clear benefit of pictorial warnings. It was a cross-sectional study, in which males and females above 15 years of age were inducted from the psychiatry OPD of a tertiary care teaching hospital and psychiatry community outreach clinics. A total of 86 tobacco users and 88 non-users were administered semi-structured questionnaire. Level of dependence on nicotine was assessed by Fagerstrom test. All participants were aware about the health hazards of tobacco use and main sources of information were T.V., newspapers and other media (75%) rather than pictorial warnings (25%). Overall the pictorial warnings had significant impact on 19.7% of tobacco users only, with a slightly higher impact on low dependent users (N=31). 61.3% of non users were aware of pictorial warnings and the reasons for not initiating tobacco were mainly awareness about health hazards through different media. Majority of the tobacco users and the non users perceive pictorial warnings to be clear, understandable and detrimental. About 1/5th of tobacco users report the positive impact of pictorial warnings.
