Impact of Urbanization on Water Bodies Using Remote Sensing Techniques - A Case Study of The Shrinking Ambattur Lake, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India

Abstract

Ambattur Lake is located in the Ambattur taluk of the Chennai Corporation. For the past, few decades Ambattur lake has changes in its water body due to a large number of anthropogenic activities. Ambattur Lake, is a reservoir that depends on the South-West Monsoon showers. In the past few decades, this lake has undergone shrinkage due to various development, that has been computed using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques coupled with field validation. A set of four Landsat satellite images that were acquired and Google Earth images of recent decades are employed to map the changes in sur face area of the Ambattur Lake. In the present study, Landuse and Land cover methods are used to analyse the changes in and around the water area of the Ambattur Lake. As a vast stretch of settlements and industries has encroached the lake area, the quality of water has deteriorated each year. Massive amounts of industrial waste are being discharged in the lake. The shrinkage of the Ambattur lake was around 106.71 hectare of land, which is approx. 40 percent of the lake area. The Impact of urbanisation on lakes has been mapped, to show how the local residents use it as a sewage dump.
