Implementation of health education in elementary, junior high and secondary schools in opinions of a selected group of schoolchildren

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4

Abstract

Obtaining the opinions of schoolchildren concerning health education at school is one of the basic good practices in the area of health. The purpose of the presented study was to determine how schoolchildren perceive the implementation of health education in their schools, and whether in their opinion there are differences regarding this process between schools functioning on various levels within one town. The research aimed at finding answers to the following questions: Do junior high and secondary schools continue the process of investing in schoolchildren’s health awareness initiated in elementary school? What kind of health education model emerges from the collected opinions? 368 schoolchildren attending elementary, junior high and secondary schools participated in the survey. Most of them did not know that health education is implemented in their schools, and those who knew about it assessed it in a rather negative way. As little as below 1 of the schoolchildren admitted that their school takes care of their health. The opinions collected suggest that the older the child, the lower the activity of the school in promoting physical activity, and the lower the participation of schoolchildren in various forms of healthy motor activities. Both the subject matter and the forms of implementing health education classes often do not meet the schoolchildren’s needs, and their usefulness is low. The educational needs of the children have not been diagnosed. There are also clear differences in the quality and variety of forms of communicating health-related information in individual schools. Junior high and secondary schools do not continue the process of investing in students’ health awareness initiated in primary school. An authoritative health education model still prevails in the schools attended by the schoolchildren examined.Key wordsopinion, schoolchildren, health education, school, health promotion, Health Promoting School
