Improving Manufacturing Process Planning Through the Optimization of Operation Sequencing

Journal Title: Machine Design - Year 2017, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

Defining machining time and cost represents the basis for selecting the optimal process plan within the production system. The problem of optimizing process plans at the macro level includes two basic tasks that are performed simultaneously. The first task refers to the selection of appropriate machining operations for given features as well as the selection of manufacturing resources, while the second task focuses on the determination of the optimal sequence of selected machining operations and their grouping into setups. This paper considers the problem of defining feasible sequences of machining operations using the precedence relationships, as well as the time-based optimization of these sequences using the simulation technique. Precedence rules, or so called precedence relationships are defined by applying the dimensional, geometric, technological and economic precedences that are used to develop matrices of anteriorities among operations. Based on the matrices of anteriorities, rational variants of process plans are defined with the feasible operation and setup sequences. Also, the time-based optimization of manufacturing process planning for the considered housing sample part is performed using the simulation technique within the CAD/CAM system.
