Improving methodical approaches to assessing the industry’s competitiveness

Abstract
The article is devoted to the authors’ approach to assessing the industry’s competitiveness, taking into account the dynamic and sectoral aspects. Existing methodical approaches to competitiveness assessment are considered. To obtain a final assessment of the industry’s competitiveness, it was suggested to use the method based on the standardization of the source data array. Unlike existing methods, this approach allows us to generalize the individual evaluation indicators that have different units of measure, numerical order and impact vector. Also it provides visibility of the overall level of the industry’s competitiveness with the determination of the each component influence on the final result of assessment. The essence and procedure for calculating based on the proposed method for assessing the industry’s competitiveness are presented on the example of the Ukrainian chemical industry. It is concluded that the high negative dynamics of the competitiveness of the chemical industry is mainly due to the low level of its reputational, investment and innovative components. The constructed graphic profile of the industry’s competitiveness makes it possible to assess the potential for its recovery by individual components. The presented approach can be used (with certain modifications taking into account sectoral peculiarities) in assessing the dynamics of competitiveness of any branch of the economy, as well as in comparative studies of intersectoral and international nature.
