Abstract

Janusz Wałek commemorates Prof. Zdzisław Żygulski Jr., with whom he worked for many years in the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow. The professor is portrayed in this memory against the background of Puławy and the Temple of the Sibyl, the oldest Polish museum, which was founded in 1801 by Izabela Czartoryska née Fleming; and of the Princes Czartoryski Museum, where the Professor was Head of Military Department for many years. Professor Zdzisław Żygulski Jr. was a prominent scientist and art historian, an expert in weapons, Oriental culture and art, as well as a costume designer. He is recalled in various situations such as preparing an exhibition, examining historical monuments, sharing his knowledge with colleagues, giving lectures and travelling to historical places in the world. This recollection emphasises his scientific achievement, including his establishment of the exact date of Lady with Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci by analysing the costume. It also highlights the Professor’s diverse values such as his personal charm, sensitivity, deep knowledge of humanities and kindness. The author’s long-term association with Professor allowed him to make several personal recollections, and to portray him at different moments of his life, from adulthood to late old age.
