Abstract
The Legacy of D.V. Averkiiev and his historical plays do not often fall in the field of view of researchers and did not become the object of thoughtful analysis. Meanwhile, he was an interesting and popular playwright, novelist, publicist, translator and theatrical critic. Perhaps his name remained known only to a narrow circle of specialists, because in the literary struggle of that time he was attached to the aesthetic direction, and in the struggle of the social and political was an opponent of the revolutionary democrats and adhered to conservative views. It is believed that Averkiev was close to «pochvennichestvo». The article describes the socio-political, aesthetic views and the historical concept of the playwright.
