Journal Title: Revista Eletronica de Enfermagem - Year 2010, Vol 12, Issue 4

Abstract

The pressure ulcer (PU) is a health problem that involves a multidisciplinary team of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), especially the nursing staff. It may aggravate the patient's condition increasing the length of hospitalization. This study assessed the point prevalence and incidence of PU in the Adult ICU of a Public Health service of the Federal District. Descriptive and quantitative study of an observational nature, performed from October/2006 to July/2007. The sample consisted of all clients admitted to the ICU during the collection period and who met the established exclusion criteria. A previously validated mean of data collection was prepared. 57.89% punctual prevalence was identified. The incidence established was of 37.03% confirming the literature. About half of the ulcers appeared between the 2nd and 4th evaluation day. According to the Braden Scale, 55.5% of patients were at high risk of developing pressure ulcers, of which 40% developed it. The results provide information that can help improve the care provided to patients and to implement strategies for reducing these injuries.
