Incidence of ABO blood groups and taste sensitivity to phenyl thio carbamide (PTC) taste ability amid some tribal populations of south India

Abstract

Phenylthiourea synonymous with phenylthiocarbamide can classify human beings, irrespective of age and sex into two classes tasters and non tasters. The tasters would experience a bitter taste for this compound, whereas the non tasters would find it tasteless. The ability to taste phenyl thio carbamide was conformed as a simple dominant mendelian character. The incidence of phenyl thio carbamide (PTC) taste sensitivity were correlated with that of ABO blood groups of the six tribal populations (Soligas, Todas,Irulas, kattunaikans, Malayalies and Yeravas) of south India.
