Incidence of HIV, HBV and HCV infections and association of ABO and Rh blood groups with these infections among blood donors in tertiary care hospital of coastal area of Andhra Pradesh: A retrospective study

Abstract
Aims: This study was conducted to determine the incidence of HIV, HBV and HCV among blood donors and to determine the its association with ABO and Rh blood groups among blood donors in great eastern medical school and Hospital, Ragolu, Srikakulam. Materials and Methods: HIV, HBV and HCV were tested by ELISA methods approved by NACO in voluntary as well as replacement blood donors. Results: Total 8884 blood donors were registered during the period of study. Analysis of ABO blood group system observed that O blood group was the commonest among the total donors 3653 (41.1%), B blood group was seen in 2749 (30.9%), 1886 (21.2%) had A blood group, 596 (6.7%) had AB blood group. Among total blood donors 8592 (96.71%) were Rh-D positive and remaining 292 (3.29%) were Rh-D negative In the current study, the overall prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV were 0.24%,2.2%, and 0.34% correspondingly. Among total HIV sero reactive donors 47.61% were O blood group, 14.28% were B, 33.3% were A and 4.76% belongs to the blood group AB. Among the total seroreactive group 95.3% had Rh-D positive blood group and remaining 4.7% had Rh-D negative blood group. Among total HBV seroreactive donors 50.0% were O blood group, 20.91% were B, 24.49% were A and 4.59% belongs to the blood group AB. Among the total sero reactive group 95.4% had Rh-D positive blood group and remaining 4.6% had Rh-D negative blood group. Where as among total HCV sero reactive donors 56.7%% were O blood group, 26.67% were B, 13.33% were A and 3.3% belongs to the blood group AB Among the total seroreactive group 100% had Rh-D positive blood group. Conclusion: The results of current study reflects that the outcome of which are similar to other studies in India on predominant blood group antigen and its association with HIV, HBV and HCV seroreactivity, there was no association between blood group antigens with these infections.
