Incidence of malocclusions vs. orthodontic treatment need among young Polish adults – literature review.

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Constantly increasing interest in orthodontic treatment among young Polish adults makes the problem of frequency of malocclusions very topical. Aim of the study. The aim of the review was to analyze available literature concerning epidemiology of malocclusions and orthodontic treatment need in population of young Polish adults. Materials and methods. The reports in Polish literature showing the frequency of malocclusions among teenagers and young adults in the last 40 years were compared. Since no objective diagnostic methods were used and due to significant differences between the examined groups regarding group size, age and gender, no statistical analysis was possible. Results. According to the literature, the frequency of malocclusions ranged between 21 and 81% and the estimated orthodontic treatment need concerned about 60% of the population. Class II malocclusions were considered to be the most common according to the majority of the authors. Conclusions. The literature on the frequency of alocclusions among Polish adults provides data that significantly differ.. What is more, since there is no objective methods used in occlusion evaluation, it is impossible to compare the results and precisely determine orthodontic treatment need in Poland. The use of such methods as the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) could not only allow to compare results of different Polish studies with one another and with foreign publications but also define orthodontic treatment need in the population. Such study could be helpful in long – term planning of orthodontic care, both public and private.
