Surgical treatment of lower lip carcinoma with Karapandzic method – own observations

Abstract
Introduction: A satisfactory functional and aesthetic outcome of lip cancer resection is an essential guideline when selecting the method of tissue reconstruction. Aim of the study: To present initial assessment of Karapandzic flap suitability for lower lip tissue reconstruction after tumour ablative surgery.Material and methods: From 2003 to 2007 fourteen patients were treated in our department for lower lip carcinoma. In all cases tissue reconstruction was performed using Karapandzic technique.Results: Sufficient function of oral sphincter was preserved in all patients. Four patients had difficulty with wearing removable prostheses due to decrease of lip width after resection of lower lip in excess of 70%. Conclusions: Lip reconstruction described by Karapandzic gives excellent functional and aesthetic results especially in closing lip defects not exceeding 75% of lower lip length.
