Indications and complications of abdominal hysterectomy

Abstract
Background: Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed. Indications of hysterectomy vary from benign condition to malignancies of genital tract. Aim: To study the indications and complications of abdominal hysterectomy. Material and Methods: A total of 150 cases who were posted for abdominal hysterectomy with the appropriate indication were operated and after surgery all patients were meticulously followed postoperatively. Results: Fibroid uterus was the main indication of hysterectomy in our study which constituted about 45 (30%) followed by DUB 42 (28%), adenomyosis 17 (11.34%). There were 4 cases (2.66%) who had haemorrhage. 8 (5.33%) patients developed febrile morbidity after 24 hours of surgery. The incidence of wound infection was 7.33%. Conclusion: Hysterectomy is used commonly to improve the quality of life; however, at sometimes it is a lifesaving procedure in malignancy cases. As any other surgery, hysterectomy is also associated with intraoperative and postoperative complications, the indication should be carefully evaluated.
