Influence of dead band and speed of the regulator on frequency stabilization process in power system with powerful wind power plants and battery energy storage systems

Journal Title: Проблеми загальної енергетики - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 3

Abstract

This paper describes the process of controlling the frequency and power in a system with a powerful wind power plant and a battery energy storage system, which can be used in combination to compensate changes in power and maintain frequency at a given level with different values of the dead band and regulator speed. The study of process of regulating the frequency and power in a power system was carried out using mathematical modeling of the aggregated power system, which included, in addition to the wind power plant and battery energy storage system, thermal, nuclear and hydroelectric power plants, and taking into account losses and specified limits. The analysis of simulation results showed that the battery energy storage system, involved into the frequency and power control loop, reliably maintains the frequency in the system with its deviation not exceeding half the width of regulator's dead band. It is established that the accuracy of frequency control in the system depends on the controller speed. A threshold value of controller speed was found. It was shown that, with decrease in regulator speed below given threshold value, the frequency deviations go beyond the dead band. It was also determined that reducing the regulator response speed leads to a decrease in the accuracy of frequency control in proportion to the increase in the dead band.
