INFLUENCE OF EROSIVE PARTICLES IMPACT ANGLE ON EROSIVE WEAR INTENSITY OF POLYURETHANE COATINGS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 240, Issue 6
Abstract
The article presents examination results of the influence of alundum particle impact angle on the kinetics of the erosive wear of polyurethane coatings. Examined three-layer polyurethane coatings of an average thickness of 190 μm were examined. The average hardness acc. Buchholtz (PN-EN ISO 2815:2000) was 85, whereas the roughness parameters were Ra = 0.21 μm and Rz = 0.97 μm. The process of the erosive wear of coatings was investigated for impact angle α ranging from 25° to 75°. The erosive wear of the coatings was examined using the apparatus recommended by the Polish Standard PN-76/C-81516. The test specimen was mounted in a specially designed holder that allowed the precise setting of the angle of the specimen surface, which was subsequently subjected to testing. The apparatus enabled free fall of an abrasive material from 0.94 m height. As the abrasive material particles of granulated alundum of grain size 0.60–0.71 mm (acc. PN-76/M-59111) were applied. Examination that that the lower α angle, the higher the intensity of erosive wear of the polyurethane coating. For α angle equal 25°, due to the micro-cutting process domination, more intensive erosive wear was observed (I = 4.72 μm/kg) than in the case of impact angle values higher than 60°. However, the lowest intensity of erosive wear (I = 0.83 μm/kg) of the coating was observed for the impact angle α = 75° when deformative wear dominated.
