Influence of Helicobacter pylori eradication on blood lipids and fibrinogen in patients with functional dyspepsia
Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 4
Abstract
Introduction: In patients with atherosclerosis related cardiovascular diseases higher incidence of Helicoboacter pylori (H. pylori) infection was confirmed. The mechanism of possible relations hip between H. pylori infection and higher risk of ischaemic heart disease, cardiac infarction and stroke is being invastigated. Aim of study: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of H. pylori eradication on serum level of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol and fibrinogen in a group of patients with functional dyspepsia. Material and methods: The study comprised a group of patients with dyspeptic symptoms aged 30-70 years (38 female and 11 małe) admitted for upper intestinal tract endoscopy. They were submitted into the study under the condition of normal result of upper endoscopy and presence of H. pylori infection confirmed by rapidurease test and histological examination. For 7 days triple eradication therapy was implemented. In 4-6 weeks after eradication therapy 13C-urea breath test was performed to assess the result of eradication treatment. Three times (before eradication therapy, 4-6 weeks after therapy and 3 months after therapy) serum level of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol and fibrinogen were measu red. Results: Eradication treatment was successful in 42 patients (32 female and 10 male), in 7 patients (6 female and 1 male) H. pylori infection was still present. There were no statistically significant changes in serum level of evaluated parameters before and after eradication treatment. Mean triglycerides level before treatment was 1.39±0.76 mmol/L, 1 month after treatment - 1.52±1.26 mmol/L, 3 months after treatment - 1.51±0.98 mmol/L, total cholesterol level: before treatment - 5.34±1.08 mmol/L, 1 month after the treatment- 5.42±1.07 mmol/L, 3 months after treatment-5.59±0.87 mmol/L, HDL cholesterol: before treatment - 1.26±0.31 mmol/L, 1 month after treatment - 1.29±0.34,3 months after treatment - 1.32±0.31 mmol/L. LDL cholesterol: before treatment - 3.44±1.10 mmol/L, 1 month after treatment - 3.29±1.22 mmol/L, 3 months after treatment - 3.67±0.71 mmol/L. Fibrinogen: after treatment 2.86±0.88 g/L, 1 month after treatment 2.95±0.74 g/L, 3 months after treatment -3.17±0.72g/L Multifactorial regression analysis showed no relationship between dietary components intake and serum level of biochemical parameters measured. The only exemption was decreased intake of mono-unsaturated fatty acids after eradication which was correlated with higher serum fibrinogen level after eradication (p=0.04). Conclusions: In the group of studied patients with functional dyspepsia H. pylori eradication did not change serum level of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol and fibrinogen during3 months observation.
