INFLUENCE OF SELECTED SOLID LUBRICANTS USED IN COMPOSITE FRICTION MATERIALS ON BRAKING EFFICIENCY AND WEAR

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 243, Issue 3

Abstract

The following materials are generally used as lubricants that are added to composite friction materials: graphite, petroleum coke, and metal sulphides. Other agents are used rather infrequently. Their purpose is to limit wear and improve braking performance. Many of this components stabilise the friction factor, reducing it in a selected temperature range and increasing it in another temperature range. Therefore, selection of these components requires expertise. The first test in friction material development is the braking performance test according to ISO 26865. It is performed on a dynamometer with mass simulation falling on the braked axle with following variable parameters: pressure in the braking system, speed, and initial braking temperature. During the tests, optimum quantities and temperatures of activation can be found. Additional aspects to be considered in the choice of the solid lubricant are ecological requirements. There is a tendency to eliminate antimony from friction materials. Antimony sulphide is a widely used solid lubricant that oxidises under the influence of temperature. Antimony oxides have a higher friction factor than antimony sulphides and work better against fading. One of the most popular alternatives to antimony sulphide is the tin sulphide, but its disadvantage is the 300% higher price. The paper presents test bench, test description and test results of selected solid oils used as alternatives to antimony sulphide.
