INFLUENCE OF SOME DIETARY COMPONENTS ON IMMUNE SYSTEM ACTIVITY DURING INTENSIVE PHYSICAL EFFORT

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 3

Abstract

The epidemiological observation indicated that heavy exercise diminished the immune system activity and leads to a higher prevalence of infections (100 to 500%) in athletes, particularly of the upper respiratory tract (URTI) and prolonged time of recovery. The low fat and high carbohydrate diet triggered the release of some pro-inflammatory factors and inhibited some anti-inflammatory factors release. Therefore the negative influence of some nutrient components results in the deficiency of immune system function and enhanced susceptibility to infection seems to be commonly known, partly because of multidirectional immune-nutrient-physical effort relations, particularly evident during heavy exercise. Although the experimental data is controversial, it indicates that it is possible to influence athletes' immune system during and after heavy training by a suitable diet composition, but this is still being checked by experiments. To prevent health problems during and after the training, different diet supplements were used: glutamine, branched amino acids (BCAA), different proportions of fats, polyunsaturated fatty acids, anti free radicals vitamins, some minerals and immunomodulators. At present there is no universal formula for all sport disciplines, ensuring the advantageous relations between health, nutrition and physical effort. It seems that for correct relactions between these factors, after constituting the training program, and an adequate caloric overlie, it is necessary to check selected immune system parameters, and than correct the diet composition to diminish the inexpedient heavy training influence on immunity.
