INFLUENCE OF SWIMMING CLASSES TO BODY HEIGHT, BODY MASS AND BMI IN SECONDARY SCHOOL YOUTH
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 5
Abstract
Background. Body Mass Index (BMI) is an accurate indicator of body mass due to its strong correlation with the amount of adipose tissue. Scientific research results have proven that exercises in water environment cause the decrease in body mass. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of regularly attended swimming classes on BMI values in secondary school pupils.Material and methods. The experimental group consisted of 49 boys and 40 girls from the second form of a secondary school, that regularly attended physical education lessons at a swimming pool. In the control group, there were 30 boys and 41 girls from the other secondary school and they did not take part in swimming classes. Body height and body mass were measured in November 2006 and December 2007. 12-min Cooper's swimming test was conducted in the experimental group.Results. The tendency to increase body mass was more distinct in control group, both in boys and girls. After one year, the differences in body mass between boys from experimental and control group were significant (p<0,05). The values of BMI were also higher in control group. The performance of swim test was poor, but the correlations between results of the test and body mass or body height were not found.Conclusions. Secondary school students, regularly taking part in swimming classes, have less values of BMI and distinctly less body mass than their non-swimming contemporaries.
