Abstract
Thisarticleisareviewofcurrentdataofparentalinfluencesonthefeedinghabitsofpreschoolers (2-6 yearsofage).Thisbeginsatimewheneatingandphysicalactivityhabitsarebeingestablished.1Over-control, restriction, pressuretoeatandapromiseofrewardshavenegativeeffectsonchildren’sfoodacceptance.2 Whenparentsbelievedtheirchildrencouldselfregulate, theyuselessrestrictivefeedingpracticesbecauserestrictioncancompromiseself-regulatoryabilities.3Asrolemodels, parentsneedtoassesstheirowneatinghabitssotheirchildrencanlearntomakehealthyfoodchoices.4 Theeatinghabitschildrenpickup, willhelpthemmaintainahealthylifestylewhentheyareadults.5 Duringearlyandmiddlechildhood, familyenvironmentsarethekeycontentsforthedevelopmentoffoodpreferences, eatingstylesandthedevelopmentofactivitypreferencesandpatternsthatshapechildren’sdevelopingweightstatus.6 Whethergeneticpredispositionsaremanifestedinfoodpreferencesdependsontheeatingenvironment, includingfoodavailabilityandchildfeedingpracticesoftheadults.7 Foodaversionscanbelearntinonetrialifconsumptionisfollowedbydiscomfort. Childrenaremorelikelytoeatinemotionallypositiveatmospheres.8 Parentingpracticeshavebeeninfluencedbysocio-culturalshiftsincludingariseinsingleparenthood, greaterfamilyinstability, lossofextendedfamilysupportandincreasedrelianceonchildcarearrangement (BirchandDavison 2001).9 Maternaleducationhadamarkedeffectontherelationshipbetweenparentingbehaviourandchilddevelopment.10 Studieshaveshownthatchildhoodexperienceswithfoodplaysanimportantroleineatinghabitslaterinlife.11 Providingasafeandnurturingatmosphereandlettingchildrenbeinvolvedinpurchasingandpreparingfoods promotehealthyeatinghabits.12 Inconclusion,positiveparentalrolemodelmaybeabettermethodforimprovingachild’sdietthanattemptsatdietarycontrol.13
