INFLUENZA IN SPORT
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 2
Abstract
Influenza is an acute infectious disease that can be successfully prevented by a vaccination. The infection may spread by a droplet or contact way, influenza outbreaks were described during winter Olympic games. The sudden illness in an elite athlete can significantly disrupt a training plan or reduce a chance of the success. In addition, elite athletes are often travelers to different climate zones, which predispose them to infections. For these reasons, the influenza vaccination is recommended for elite athletes. The inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine given intramuscular, in the non-dominant limb is recommended. The live attenuated influenza vaccine administered intranasally or vaccines with adfuvants are nor recommended. The inactivated influenza vaccine is safe and effective. In order to minimize the risk of unwanted side effects of the vaccine the prophylactic use of analgesics and antipyretics is recommended, a rapid administration of infection (1-2 seconds) and the use of long needles (25 mm) should be preferred. The vaccination up to 6 hours after the physical effort is considered to be optimal. Elite athletes traveling to the other hemisphere in a season typical for influenza infection it is recommended to get a second dose of vaccine, with a composition typical for this hemisphere. In the case of illness or after exposure to the disease, it is possible to use the neuraminidase inhibitors (osellamivir or zanamivir), which reduce the duration of the disease and reduce the risk of complications if they are administered within 48 hours from the onset of symptoms. These antivirals can cause side effects, their overuse might lead to an increased risk of the resistance of influenza viruses. Neuraminidase inhibitors given as post-exposure prophylaxis are effective in 80%, therefore they should not be considered as an alternative to influenza vaccination.
