COMPARISON OF SELECTED PARAMETERS OF PHYSICAL EFFICIENCY IN FIGHTING SPORTS - ON EXAMPLES OF TAEKWON-DO AND KICK-BOXING

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The aim of this paper is aerobic and anaerobic efficiency assessment in high-qualified (National Team) competitors engaged in kick-boxing and taekwon-do during their transition period.Material and methods. The effort test on treadmill with gradually rising load to refusal was used to determine aerobic efficiency. The following parameters were obtained during the test (breath-by-breath method): oxygen consumption (VO2 in l/min and VO2 in ml/kg/min), minute ventilation (MV in l/min), respiratory quotient (RQ) and oxygen equivalent (EQO2 – l/l). Heart rate (HR beat/ min) was monitored in a continuous way using Polar Sport Tester. Determination of anaerobic efficiency level was performed with supramaximum Wingate test (30 sek.) on cycle ergometer (Monark 874E). The most relevant parameters were subjected to analysis: total work (J/kg), maximum power (W/kg), time of maximal power reaching and time of maximal power maintenance (sek).Results. Maximum values of lungs minute ventilation (MV) in group of competitors engaged in taekwon-do was higher (although insignificantly) than in kick-boxing group. The general values of VO2max and VO2max with reference to body weight were higher (statistically significant) in taekwon-do group. There were no differences in carbon dioxide production (VCO2 in l/min) in the examined groups. However, average values of respiratory quotient (RQ) and oxygen equivalent (EQVO2) were significantly higher (p
