ATTITUDES TOWARD EFFECTS OF ANDROGENIC-ANABOLIC STEROIDS (AAS) USEAND THE DOPING BEHAVIORS IN WEIGHTLIFTING AND JUDO PLAYERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. The aim of this study was study was to recognize sense of the two factors affec-ting decision-making regarding use of anabolic-androgenic steroids as performance-enhancing drugs by athletes. The purpose-designed simple ąuestionnaire regarding attitude toward effects ofAAS on: athletic performance and athletic health was used. These responses were deliberated with respect to results of anti-doping controls carried out over the period 1998-2008. The study was conducted among weightlifters and judo players. Materiał and methods. Samples of małe (n=73) and female (n=59) weightlifters, as well as małe (n=69) and female (n=55) judo players were inten/iewed. The total cases ofpositive urine samples collected over 10y period (1998-2008) amounted 7, 2, 50, 3 among małe and female judoists and małe and female weightlifters. Results. 90% of the małe weightlifters sample believed in considerable effects ofAAS on their weightlifting performance, but only 26% ofall are ofthe opinion about major side effects. This group was the most prone to use AAS as was revealed by anti-doping controls. Generally both sexes of judo players considered AAS doping agents of little effectiveness in judo. Interestingly that within małe weightlifters, the athletes who declared the highest belief in effect ofAAS on performance, did not believe in major side effect. Some of them added their own comments suggesting dependence of the extent of risk for health on dosage ofAAS. Conclusions. Based on found results one may assume that among athletes their attitudes toward effects of doping agents may create the doping behavior.
