ADEQUATE VITAMIN D INTAKE AND THE RESISTANCE AND INJURY RISK IN ATHLETES- THE REVIEW OF CURRENT REPORTS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 1
Abstract
Physical activity on professional level foster occurrence of infections and injuries. Due to increased training weights which accompany high rank events e.g. Olympic Games, injuries and infections are problems for 12% and 8% competitors. Vitamin D presents immunomodulating action. Its active form 1,25(OH)D increases production of IL-10, cathelicidin, SlgA in saliva, CD14 expression or phagocytic potential of macrophages and reduces production of IL-2, IFN-y, CD40 expression. There is a minus correlation between blood serosity 25(OH)D concrentation and frequency of upper respiratory tract infections. 5000UI vitamin D daily supplementation for 14 weeks may relevantly increase cathelicidin and SlgA concentration in saliva. In case of vitamin D deficit calcium absorption is lowered .To maintain proper calcium concentration in serosity PTH secretion is increased as well as expression of RANKL which induces osteoclasts incubating generating in the same time increased bone turnover encouraging fractures. There is a minus correlation between blood serosity 25(OH)D concrentation and frequency of injuries. Vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk of injuries. There is a limited number of scientific publications which address vitamin D influence on the risk of infections and injuries among sportsmen. However, conducted researches unambiguously present benefits coming from proper vitamin D nutrition. Optimal concentration in blood serosity 25(OH)D is 20-50ng/ml. From September to April advised vitamin D supplementation for general public is 800-2000 Ul vitamin D3 per day.
