Institutional actions on behalf of the disabled

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4

Abstract

The disabled, apart from health problems, usually struggle with limitations in functioning in the social, occupational and economic spheres. In order to improve the life situation of the disabled, institutions are founded the goal of which is rehabilitation, supporting activity and material assistance; non-institutional actions are also undertaken, mainly within self-help groups. The objective of the study is the presentation of selected institutional actions on behalf of the disabled.Institutional actions undertaken on behalf of the disabled are of a long-term and multi-sphere character. These actions consist in the reduction of physical barriers; however, they should lead primarily to the elimination of social barriers encountered by the disabled. Among all-Polish institutions which function on behalf of the disabled there are, among others, the National Fund for Rehabilitation of the Disabled PFRON, Government Plenipotentiary Bureau for the Matters of the Disabled, and agencies of Social Welfare.Negative changes in the demographic structure of our society, and associated with it an increase in the number of people afflicted by disability, is an increasingly more important social issue. This imposes the undertaking of the legal actions within the framework of social policy, aimed at the social security of the disabled. The essence of wide-ranging and coordinated actions by many institutions should be counteracting social exclusion, as well as the preparation of an adequate field for their activity.Key wordsdisability, institutional actions, support
