INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF ARCHAEOLOGY IN IVAN FRANKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LVIV DURING THE FIRST HALF OF XX CENTURY (ACCORDING TO MATERIALS FROM FOREIGN ARCHIVAL SOURCES)

Abstract

The tradition of teaching of archeology at the University of Lviv, which is one of the oldest universities in our country, continues from the first half of XIX century. Later, I. Szaranewych, M. Hrushevskyi, L. Cwiklinski made their contribution to the formation of archeology at Lviv University. The first Chair of Classical Archeology and History was led by K. Hadaczek (1905–1914), and the heyday of archeology in this scientific-educational institution can be dated back to 1916–1939, when there were two chairs of archeology, headed by E. Bulanda and L. Kozłowski. All archaeologists of the Lviv University contacted closely and established cooperation with the scientific institutions of this region and abroad. Such cooperation was primarily dependent on their scientific interests, individual relationships and personal material opportunities. Connections of Lviv archaeologists with the institutions of Kraków were especially close, therefore, it is not surprising that materials for the history of archeology of the University of Lviv were deposited in their scientific foundations. The forced transfer of the group of Lviv scholars to Wrocław in 1945 also caused the fact that the archives of the University of Wrocław includes interesting evidences not only of biographical character but also related to Lviv academic archeology of 20–40's of XX century.
