Abstract
It is a review of the monograph of Ukrainian archaeologist Victor Vojnarovs'kyi "Промисли та допоміжні ремесла населення півдня Східної Європи І–ХІІІ ст. (археологічне відображення та інтерпретація). Львів, 2014. 438 с.". The subject of this study lies with field trades and auxiliary crafts practised by the populace of the southern parts of Eastern Europe in the period of 1st-13th c. – from the establishment of Roman hegemony over the majority of Europe on the brink of a new era to the Mongol subjugation of Kievan Rus in the 13th century. In ancient times, scientific progress has been slow enough that within narrow chronological margins it is unnoticeable. By examining technologies in the time frame of one and a half millennium, as they have developed in the environments of primitive society, proto- and early state systems, as well as developed feudalism, itis possible to reveal the dynamics of their advancement, to determine reasons for acceleration of technological progress (demand for goods, market state, trade, asset and social stratification within the society, state system) and its decline (absence of previous reasons, direct threats to life and business), especially considering the specific circumstances of the area – uneven development rate in different regions of modern Ukrainian territory as well as the southern part of Eastern Europe as a whole, interruption of the autochthonous evolutionary movement of the native populace by intrusions from outside the region (Germanic migrations, Hun invasion, Turkish and Mongol conquests).
