Interaction between ammonium nitrate and salinity on germination rate and vegetative growth of French marigold (Tageta patula)
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 10
Abstract
Marigold has especial importance and application in landscape designing. Now, various species and cultivars of this plant are grown in many climates, which the problems such as environmental stresses like freezing, salinity and drought damages is leading to vegetative disorders. This study was performed in order to evaluate the interaction between ammonium nitrate and salinity on seed germination rate and vegetative growth of French Marigold flower (Tegeta patula) as factorial arrangement in completely randomized design with salinity factor (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mmos.cm-1) and ammonium nitrate (AN) factor (0, 15 and 30 gL-1) at four replications. Based on the results, Different salinity concentrations had significant influence on the all evaluated traits except germination rate so that by increasing salinity the above traits significantly decreased. Despite significant reduction of root and shoot fresh weight, application ammonium nitrate caused to remain above traits in a level in each salinity level without significant difference. Various salinity levels were effective on plant height so that plant height decreased by increasing salinity concentration. The highest plant height was observed in control treatments. Also, different salinity levels had significant influence on shoot fresh weight.
