INTERMEDIALITY AND SYNESTHESIA AS COMPONENTS OF EKPHRASTIC ENGLISH-LANGUAGE DISCOURSEOF V. WOOLF

Abstract

The article examines functions of the intermediality and synesthesia of the visual, auditory and tactile perception in the ekphrastic English-language discourse «Three pictures» by Virginia Woolf. The scientific articles on this topic are analyzed. An own interpretation of such basic terms of the work as «ekphrasis», «ekphrastic discourse». «intermediality» and «synesthesia» is proposed. In particular, we have interpreted the ekphrasis as a stylistic divice which combines expressiveness, narrativity (the main point of the event is in the context of the story and it is related with interpretation), representativeness (reproduction) and imagology (figurativeness). We understand the definition «ekphrastic discourse» as using some works of visual art in the generation and reception of a literary text and a work of art in general. It was researched that during the perception of verbalized work of art, several sensations are uncontrollably combined. It means that synesthesia is used in the ekphrastic discourse. Investigating the work of Virginia Woolf, we identified the main features of the ekphrastic discourse «Three pictures», including a combination of several types of art for increasing recipients` background knowledge and using the verbalization of several sensations at the same time. Using the method of contextological analysis we have investigated the deeper meaning and the implicity-informative component of the ekphrastic discourse of the writer. Also, the use of intermediality is revealed. As a result, we have investigated the interaction of such related arts as painting and literature. The writer refers to the work of the world famous painter Edvard Munch «Scream».
