Interpersonal Communication Principles in Islam and their Reflections in Modern Theories

Journal Title: Marife Dini Araştırmalar Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 1

Abstract

In a society, it is quite difficult to think of a professional communication without applying interpersonal communication rules. Interpersonal communication methods are applied in order to prevent communication clashes, solve current problems and to structure an ongoing interaction. Although these approaches are subject to change according to the cultural heritage of the societies, it won’t be mistaken to state that basic principles such as smiling, sharing and avoiding prejudice are the common values for all communities. These values, also might be named as universal ones, are seen as compulsory by different religions (Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism etc.) and accepted as the main pre-conditions of promised eternal happiness. In this context, this article, employing communication theories in general but particularly interpersonal communication literature, aims to examine the reflections of an Islamic interpersonal communication model. Looking at the definitions of the theorists regarding communication, this article tackled the debates related to interpersonal communication and concluded that it is possible to structure an Islamic interpersonal communication model based on Islamic sources, mainly Koran and suggestions, discourses, interactions and attitudes of Prophet Mohammad. The customs highlighted by Koranic verses and the Prophet match up with the professional interpersonal communication principles which are discussed in communication literature.
