INTERPRETAÇÃO AMBIENTAL DO JARDIM BOTÂNICO DE PORTO ALEGRE

Abstract
This article results from a qualitative study that aims to analyze the environmental interpretation proposed by the Botanical Garden of Porto Alegre. In general, botanical gardens are living spaces for culture and leisure, open to the public, and differ from parks for harboring a collection of plant species, ordered and properly classified and recorded, what increases their educational potential. These spaces are also considered ideal for educational and interpretative recreational practices, providing many benefits to society, including knowledge about botany from the environmental interpretation. Therefore, this study presents a case study, relating to the effectiveness of the environmental interpretation of the Botanical Garden of Porto Alegre, evaluating its proposes and if (and how) it encourages the visitor to understand it as a conservation unit. From the on-site observation and literary review, it was found that the current system of environmental interpretation adopted by the Botanical Garden, with actions dating from 2001 to 2008, requires restructuring and new proposals and equipment.
