INTERPRETATION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IMAGES AS PREFIGURATION ON THE NEW TESTAMENT’S IN KYRYLO TRANQUILION STAVROVETSKY’S HOMILIES
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2016, Vol 276, Issue 264
Abstract
The present article explores Kyrylo Tranquilion Stavrovetsky’s homilies that uses Old Testament images, namely images of Mo-ses and Jesus, Adam and Jesus, the Promised Land, Moses serpent and cross. These images are of key importance to the baroque author of the homilies because they introduce and anticipate the Gospel. A growing body of literature recognizes the importance of typological reading of the Bible. A much-debated question is whether father Kyrylo used traditional examples of typological similari-ty or created his own on the base of existing tradition. The aim of the article is to explore the relations between the Old and New Testament images in Stavrovetsky’s homilies from «The Didactic Gospel». The methodological base of the research implies to Hans-Georg Gadamer hermeneutics and St. Augustine’s interpretation of the Bible studies. The innovation of the article lies in its subject: there is little research on comparable study of the Bible and «The Didactic Gospel» by Kyrylo Tranquilion Stavrovetsky. This study might be used in further exploration of the homilies from «The Didactic Gospel» and in comparative studies of the Bible. Using of the common interpretive pattern of the Old Testament images the baroque author accomplishes the special tension in homilies’ presentation, which is based on typological reading of the biblical text.
