NIETZSCHE’S CONCEPTS IN WORKS OF LESYA UKRAINKA AND LOU SALOME

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of influence of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy on the writing strategies of women authors which represent different national models of early literary modernism – Lesya Ukrainka (Ukrainian model) and Lou Salome (Ger-man model). First of all, the main problem which remains during an analysis of Lesya Ukrainka’s works through the context of Nie-tzsche’s concepts is that for a long time in Post-Soviet region the influence which Nietzsche had on Ukrainka’s works was radically denying or ignoring; as for Lou Salome, her literary works were underestimated. Such tendencies have been changed only in the end of XXth century. Consequently, many works appeared concerning Nietzsche’s influence on Lesya Ukrainka and Lou Salome, but there was already no comparison of these two models of writing. To start with, Nietzsche’s critisicm against Christianity were no-ticeably perceived by both Lesya Ukrainka and Lou Salome, for example, from the point of opposition of the concept of sacrifice which excludes self-responsibility and the idea of self-sacrifice which can help to make personal choices and ‘struggle for God’. What is more, the idea of author’s personal freedom is implemented in both Lesya Ukrainka’s and Lou Salome’s works through the concept of Nietzsche’s Apollo-Dionysus contradistinction; appealing for ‘natural’ instead of ‘cultural’ values is necessary for Lesya Ukrainka’s and Lou Salome’s characters. To sum up, the ways in which main concepts of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy are im-plemented in works of Ukrainian and German women writer can be fruitfully compared, and such an analysis can brightly demon-strate both integrity of the aesthetics of modernism and specific features of each national model.
